Can You Work With a Treadmill Desk?

Do you spend two or more hours sitting at work? If you do, then you might want to consider using a treadmill desk. Sitting for long periods of time has been proven to be bad for your health. A treadmill desk allows you to work and avoid sitting at the same time. Can you really walk and work at the same time? The answer is yes, once you get used to it. Your success depends mainly on establishing the perfect pace.

1 - Establishing the perfect pace and productivity

In order to be productive while you walk, you need to find a pace that lets you do that. You can start by setting the treadmill to 1 or 2 mph. Depending on what your tasks are, the appropriate pace can be found. How about typing while you walk? It may feel strange at first, but you get used to it. Talking on the phone, checking emails or reading are easy tasks; therefore, using a treadmill while doing them might not be challenging.

Some people that use treadmill desks find they can’t do everything while they walk. They either need to sit down or just stand still.  So what if your job requires high-levels of concentration and you can’t walk at the same time? If this is your case, just remember that sitting for too long is unhealthy. There are many other ways you can reduce the time you spend sitting down.

2 - Benefits

Walking while you work literally adds years to your life. In a study, women who sat for more than 6 hours a day were more likely to develop cancer. In contrast with those that sat for 3 hours or less. Using a treadmill desk is a sure way to cut down on the time you spend sitting down.

3 - Are treadmill desks expensive?

Treadmill desks first became available in 2007 and were expensive. Nowadays lots of people buy them because they are affordable for almost any budget. If you do a Google search, you can find many different models and prices. You can also buy just the desk without the treadmill, if you already own one.

4 - Taking your treadmill to work

Lots of companies are adding treadmills to the work space. Google, Microsoft, Hyatt and Marriott are among some of the companies adopting the use of treadmill desks. They also place the treadmill desks in common areas, so people can use them for a while and then return back to their desks. This goes in hand with the various productivity levels mentioned before.

You don’t need to walk and work all the time, but you can do certain tasks while you walk. At the same time, maybe your work area is too small to add a treadmill desk, but there are still many things you can do to reduce the length of time you are sitting down.

Working at a treadmill desk can help you live longer and healthier. Plus, you can also burn more calories by walking. Just cut back on the amount of time you sit whenever possible, especially if you sit for more than 2 hours every day.
